Jayne Cobb's Cunning Hat

Once upon a time there was a TV show called Firefly, which was excellent but got canned by Fox partway through season one. In one episode, Jayne Cobb, the big tough guy, is sent a knitted hat by his mother, and he wears it almost the whole episode. Firefly got made into a movie called Serenity which comes out 30th September 2005. Hubby wishes to wear a Jayne Cobb hat to the opening night of the movie.

Jayne Cobb's cunning hat.

"Man walks down the street in a hat like that, you know he's not afraid of anything."
Wash, in "The Message."

The hat will be made from an adaptation of this pattern for worsted weight yarn and my bulletproof gauge. Swatch first!

Jayne hat

Started the Jayne Cobb hat for Hubby to wear to the opening night of the Serenity movie on September 30th.

Jayne hat yarn and swatch.

I like the Knit Picks Wool of the Andes, the Carrot and Daffodil colours are perfect. Unfortunately the Tomato I ordered with them was a little too radioactive red, so I got some Plymouth Galway at lunchtime to replace it.

It is highly unlikely the hat will appear in the movie, but anyone who's watched the Firefly series on DVD will recognise the hat. The episode it appeared in (The Message) was never aired by Fox when the series was originally broadcast all higgledy piggledy out of order, but the Sci Fi channel is airing all episodes in order, they're showing the second episode this week.

If you've never seen Firefly, give it a chance. The dialogue is sharp, the stories are excellent, the universe is plausible, it's really funny. Sci-fi western in space.

FO: Jayne Cobb hat

Finished the Jayne Cobb hat for Hubby:

Jayne Cobb Hat.

The scraps of yarn are all that's left of the Wool of the Andes, most of it went into the pompom. This is one of the scariest things I've ever knit. I made the ear flaps in Fisherman's rib, and it looks decent. I'm not going to wear one though. I based it off the Superfly pattern. Attaching pompoms is harder than I thought, but I think I got the thing anchored.

I know for a fact there will be at least three of these things on Sept 30th at Serenity opening night, because Timothy is knitting one for himself and I have an order for another one. Hat #2 is going to be made from Reynolds Lopi, so it'll knit up faster.

FO: Jayne Cobb hat #2

This is positively the last one of these things I'm knitting:

Jayne hat.

This thing cuts your IQ in half the moment you wear it. It is the perfect Jayne hat, made from Reynolds Lopi on size 8 needles. I do not like making pompoms. Look for action pictures of both hats around Sept 30th for the Serenity movie premiere.

Serenity

Went to see Serenity on Friday with these three:

Three men in Jayne hats.

I knitted the two hats on the ends, Hubby is the handsome one on the far left. The movie was great, some surprises, including a really sad one, but I want to see it again. Jodi spotted the hat in the movie and I missed it!

FO: A Cunning Hat

If you want a knitter to make something for you, there's a few ways of getting what you want. One is to ask politely, saying please and thank you. Another is to offer money. A fantastic way to get a knitted thing is that breathless look of excitement at the thought of wearing it. That's worth a lot.

Back in 2005 I made two of these for opening night of the Serenity movie, and I said I'd never make another one. However, Jen Sights nailed the triple, she asked politely, offered money, and cannot wait to have it. So, five years on, made another one:

Jayne Cobb's Cunning Hat.

Pattern: Personal mashup including decreases from Halfdome knit in the round.
Yarn: Reynolds Lopi Lite (colours Burnt Orange, Dijon, and Wine Red)
Needles: US6 circular, magic loop
Duration: December 9th to December 31st 2009

There was some trauma in this hat's life. I made it too long and had to rip out and redo the yellow section and part of the orange section. Found out I'm really good at weaving in the ends, and Lopi does not give up those weavings lightly. But it was ripped out, redone, and completed in the space of one day, and it's a much better hat. Sometime very soon it will go to its owner, and there will be a picture of the look of "SQUEE" on her face. I'm looking forward to seeing that!

This is not a pretty hat. It's not a flattering hat. However, it is a warm hat, and it's quick to knit. I might make one for myself, but without the earflaps and pompom, using the bulky weight Lopi yarn, and in very different colours. So not the same hat at all.
