Yertle the Turtle

(I made Yertle from a pattern in Kath Dalmeny's book World of knitted toys, an excellent book full of simple patterns that make you look like an expert knitter without really trying.)

Yertle begins.

Yertle begins. This is stash yarn I got in England to do a Wallace and Gromit sweater in the mid 1990's. Good old Paton's Knit and Save acrylic.

Exploded diagram.

Shell game. All the pieces for the shell are complete.

Assembled shell. Entering the third dimension of knitting.

April 6th 2004:
Back legs are knitted but not assembled. They look pretty boring, just beige finger shapes. Got the filling on Monday (sounds like I'm making a pie, not a turtle), the underbelly is also complete. Head, tail and front legs are all that's left to knit, then it's all over bar the assembly.

Naked turtle.

April 9th 2004:
Limbs and tail are all done and assembled, working on the head. Found two sparkly blue beads to use as eyes. Mildly concerned that eyes won't line up once head is stuffed, but that's correctable. This is what a turtle looks like under the shell.

Flat turtle.

Limbs and shell together, the final word in flat.
