Web Design Virtues

Updated 8th April 2002
(see also: Cardinal Sins of Web Design)

I hadn't thought before that, while I have a list of web design sins, there are no positive recommendations. Thanks for pointing that out, Patrick. So, here is a list of things you should be doing. I'll try and make it more than just the opposite of the Cardinal Sins of Web Design list.

  1. Test, test, and test again
(ideally under Windows, Mac and Linux, using Explorer, Mozilla and Opera)

  2. Minimise animation
(rollovers should be subtle. The blink tag is banned)

  3. Think carefully about the sections of the site
(what logical divisions can you use?)

  4. Use the spell checker

  5. Use a sans-serif font
(make the text colour readable against your chosen background)

  6. Keep a consistent look and feel
(colour scheme, image style, writing style, etc.)

This list is in its infancy. Suggestions welcome.
